How I Tackle my Postpartum Hair Loss | Postpartum Hair Loss Tips for New Moms

As a new mother, the journey of postpartum hair loss can be both surprising and disheartening. Witnessing those precious locks you've nurtured during pregnancy suddenly thinning can be a shock to the system. As someone who's been through the trenches of postpartum hair loss myself, I've discovered a routine that has helped me not only manage the shedding but also promote the health and strength of my hair. From gentle brushes to nourishing treatments, join me as I share my journey and the products and practices that have become my allies in combating postpartum hair loss, all while keeping my long, fine, blonde hair vibrant and resilient. I will start out by saying, I am not a doctor or hair care professional, these are just some of the things I use and added to my routine that I have had positive experiences with.

My Hair Type: I have very fine, long hair. My hair is naturally a dirty blonde but I have been lightening my hair for the past 15 years. I always make sure to use quality products but after having my baby several months ago, I have been experiencing postpartum hair loss.

  1. Hair Oil & Scalp Stimulation: One crucial aspect of my postpartum hair care routine involves the use of hair oils, particularly castor oil, to nourish my scalp and stimulate hair follicles. Applying a generous amount of castor oil or a similar hair oil to my scalp allows me to deeply moisturize and nourish the roots of my hair, promoting healthier growth. Paired with a scalp massager, this combination becomes a potent tool for stimulating blood circulation to the scalp and awakening dormant hair follicles. The gentle massage action not only feels incredibly relaxing but also helps to distribute the oil evenly, ensuring that every follicle receives the nourishment it needs to thrive. Incorporating this step into my weekly routine has not only provided me with a moment of self-care but has also contributed to the overall strength and vitality of my hair, combating the effects of postpartum hair loss with natural, nurturing care. I like to use this Castor Oil (under $10) or this Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Oil (also under $10). I personally use a basic scalp massager like this one, but recently found this electronic scalp massager that looks like it would be a great item!

  2. Shower Care: I wash my hair about 1-2 times a week and I like to use a nice salon quality shampoo & conditioner. I prefer the Matrix Color Obsessed Shampoo & Olaplex Conditioner because I color my hair, but you should talk with your hair care professional about what they recommend for your hair. I make sure to brush my hair with a Wet Brush BEFORE showering, I shampoo my hair twice, then allow my conditioner to sit in my hair for a few minutes before combing gently with a wide tooth comb. **About once a month, or anytime I feel my hair is extra dry, instead of conditioner, I will use this hair mask in the shower which seems to hydrate my hair perfectly. I've been using it for years and always reach for it especially after vacations when my hair needs a refresh.

  3. After Shower Care: After I step out of the shower, but before I blow dry my hair, I like to put a couple of products in. I use a blow dry spray, I like the Kenra Platinum Blow-Dry Spray which can be a little pricey, but this OGX Thermal Spray is more affordable and works similarly. I also use a 1/2 pump of Olaplex No 6 Bond Smoother that I work through the mid shaft down to the ends of my hair. I have found that the blow dry spray protects my hair from the heat and also lessens the dry time while the bond smoother makes my hair feel stronger and thicker and helps keep the frizz to a minimum.

  4. Blow Drying & Styling: I had a Dyson Supersonic hair dryer for years that I loved but recently stopped working. So while looking for a replacement, I wanted to make sure I got something that would be easy to use but still had a great reviews. I settled on a Shark FlexStyle and love it. I try to let my hair dry about 80% before beginning to blow dry but this tool makes it so simple. I section off my hair and apply Kenra Volume Mousse Extra 17 to each section at the roots only. I then use the round brush attachment to blow dry my hair. The combination of the brush and mousse gives my hair a great blow out look that has some volume. At the end, I like to use the FlexStyle FrizzFighter Finishing Tool to tame every last flyaway.

  5. Miscellaneous Hair Care: I try to use silk scrunchies when tying up my hair or claw clips. I also try to avoid having a ponytail or bun in the same spot every day to avoid friction and breakage. At night, I try to do heatless curls.

In conclusion, navigating postpartum hair loss can feel like an unexpected challenge for new mothers. As someone who has experienced this firsthand, I've learned the importance of a personalized care routine tailored to my hair's specific needs. From gentle scalp stimulation with nourishing oils to using quality products in the shower and after, each step plays a crucial role in promoting hair health and combating postpartum shedding. While I'm not a professional, I've found these practices and products to be incredibly beneficial in my journey.
